Nature’s Classroom

Lebanon, Tennessee

The Teaching Pavilion at the Boxwell Boat Harbor serves as the center for a boating program which can accommodate up to 48 students. The center teaches technique and safety for motor boating, water skiing, and small boat sailing.

In addition to the covered classroom, there is a rain screen enclosed area serving as the director’s office and storage area. To promote longevity and ease of maintenance, all of the wood in the pavilion is unfinished Western Red Cedar, and the only other material is the galvanized metal wall and roof.

The storage room and wall occupy the south and western exposures respectively, thus minimizing, along with the reflective metal cladding, the direct solar gain. The open north and east elevations look directly onto the waterfront where the participants enjoy calm winds coming off of the water, making the leaning curve a “breeze.”
