Rock Pavilion

Rock Pavilion is tucked along the wooded edge of a farm in Centerville, just beyond a cluster of agrarian structures near the Duck River, one of North America’s most biologically diverse waterways. Conceived as a quiet retreat, the pavilion serves as a sanctuary for a collection of stones gathered from the surrounding landscape.

Simple and precise in form, the structure is a glass enclosure framed in dark-stained Douglas fir, designed to settle naturally within its wooded setting. A continuous patchwork of shelving defines the space both inside and out, displaying the stones in shifting daylight and casting a warm glow as evening falls.

A covered porch leads to a central gallery where exposed Douglas fir beams span overhead, allowing glass to extend above and soften the boundary between interior and exterior. Outside, a third wall of shelving frames a dining area beneath a latticed roof that filters light and shadow.

Grounded by a restrained palette of dark timber and exposed aggregate, Rock Pavilion feels calm, enduring, and deeply connected to its place, reading at night as a soft lantern among the trees.
